Michael S. Carl, a foreign legal advisor at SSEK Legal Consultants, has been recognized by Who's Who Legal as one of the leading Mining practitioners in Indonesia. Michael is a supervising advisor of the firm's mining practice. He specializes in mining, energy, infrastructure, finance, insolvency and restructurings, and M&A.
Michael joined SSEK in 2004 and has more than 20 years of experience practicing law in Southeast Asia, principally in Indonesia. Michael advises multinationals and large domestic companies on all aspects of their operations in Indonesia's mining sector. He advised Intrepid Mines, listed in Australia, on the resolution of a dispute with its former Indonesian JV partner over a world-class porphyry project. He has advised on long-term coal sales agreements, represented a European state-owned electricity provider as a strategic investor in the IPO of a leading Indonesian coal producer and currently advises on smelting and other possible investments in mining assets in Indonesia.
Michael is recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers & Partners IFLR 1000 and Asialaw. He was voted in 2012 as an Indonesian External Counsel of the Year by Asian-MENA Counsel readers, who cited his wide-ranging knowledge and experience with Indonesian law.
Michael earned his JD in 1994 from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law, his MA in Economics from the University of Hawaii in 1990 and his BA from Harvard University in 1988. Michael earned an Indonesian law degree in 2012 from Atma Jaya University, Jakarta. He is fluent in Indonesian.
