Michael S. Carl, an international legal adviser at SSEK Indonesian Legal Consultants, was a featured speaker at Mining Philippines 2015. The international conference and exhibition, presented by the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, was held in Manila from Sept. 15-17.
Michael gave a presentation on September 16 on the Changing Mining Landscape in Indonesia. He examined a number of important issues in the Indonesian mining sector, including foreign shareholding limitations and divestment requirements, typical foreign ownership structures, benchmark pricing, domestic refining/processing requirements, smelter licenses and the ban on the export of raw ore.
Michael Carl is a supervising adviser for SSEK's mining practice. He advises multinationals and large domestic companies on all aspects of their operations in Indonesia's mining sector, including advising on smelting and other possible investments in mining assets in Indonesia.
Michael was recognized as one of Indonesia's leading mining lawyers in the 2015 edition of the International Who's Who of Mining Lawyers. He is recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers & Partners, IFLR1000 and Asialaw. He was voted in 2012 as an Indonesian External Counsel of the Year by Asian-MENA Counsel readers, who cited his wide-ranging knowledge and experience with Indonesian law.
Michael earned his JD in 1994 from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law. He earned an Indonesian law degree in 2012 from Atma Jaya University, Jakarta. He is fluent in Indonesian.
