SSEK Law Firm Partner Helps Lead UC Berkeley Alumni on Tour of Future Indonesian Capital

SSEK Law Firm partner Stephen Igor Warokka helped lead a recent visit to Indonesia’s planned new capital, Capital City of Nusantara (Ibu Kota Nusantara or “IKN”), by a group of University of California, Berkeley alumni from Berkeley Club Indonesia.

The Berkeley Club members got a look at some of the construction under way in the future capital, located in East Kalimantan, toured a workers’ residence, and visited an exhibition area showcasing some of the technology that might be used in IKN.

They also met with Bambang Susantono, the head of the IKN Authority.

The president of Berkeley Club Indonesia, Freddy Samad, was quoted in an article by Detikcom expressing the group’s commitment to support the development of IKN, from training and think tank services to animal conservation. Among the Berkeley Club Indonesia commitments is to help IKN go green with organic waste recycling programs.

More immediately, Berkeley Club Indonesia launched its “Bears Save Bears” initiative, presenting a donation and promising continued support for the IKN sun bear conservation program. The UC Berkeley mascot is the Golden Bear.

IKN Authority head Bambang Susantono, himself a UC Berkeley alumnus, was on hand for the presentation of the donation. Bambang, as quoted in the Detikcom article, told the Berkeley Club members, "You will become ambassadors to answer doubts and invite people to come here and see what is happening in the field.”

Stephen, who earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, is the secretary general of Berkeley Club Indonesia.
